Living the Legend: Owning a Porsche 550 Spyder

If you could find an original Porsche 550 Spyder, it would be worth £1.75M-£2.5M. Such is the value of this iconic piece of automotive history, a car that not only epitomises the golden age of motorsport but also carries with it a legacy that transcends mere metal and rubber. The Porsche 550 Spyder, introduced in 1953, was designed as a lightweight, mid-engine racer that took the motorsport world by storm. Its sleek, aerodynamic bodywork, coupled with a powerful 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine, made it a formidable competitor on the race track. With victories in prestigious events like the Targa Florio and the Carrera Panamericana, the 550 Spyder quickly earned its place in the pantheon of racing legends.

Yet, the 550 Spyder is perhaps best known for its association with Hollywood actor James Dean. Dean, a burgeoning motorsport enthusiast, purchased a 550 Spyder in 1955, a car he affectionately nicknamed "Little Bastard." Tragically, it was in this very car that Dean met his untimely death in a fatal crash on September 30th, 1955. This event, shrouded in both mystery and myth, only served to amplify the car’s already considerable mystique.

For most, owning an original 550 Spyder is a dream beyond reach, a treasure confined to the vaults of elite collectors. However, for those who still wish to experience the thrill of driving such a vehicle, the world of replicas offers a tantalising alternative. The market for Porsche 550 Spyder replicas—and their close relatives, the 718 RSK replicas—is thriving, with prices ranging from a rather reasonable £20,000 to £30,000.

These replicas, while perhaps not commanding the same reverence as the originals, are marvels in their own right. Built with meticulous attention to detail, they capture the spirit and aesthetic of the original 550 Spyder, offering enthusiasts a chance to own and drive a piece of motoring history without the eye-watering price tag. Many of these replicas are powered by air-cooled Volkswagen or Subaru engines, delivering spirited performance that’s perfectly suited to the car’s lightweight, agile chassis.

The car pictured here is one such replica. I encountered it at the Six Bells Classic Car meet, where I had the pleasure of speaking with its owner—a passionate enthusiast who personally built the car and has lovingly maintained it for the past 22 years. In that time, he’s covered around 20,000 miles, including memorable trips to the Le Mans Classic, where the car no doubt turned heads among the crowds.

While replicas often receive a bad rap from purists, they offer an accessible entry into the world of classic motoring. In a time when the originals are all but unattainable for most, these replicas allow owners to experience the joys of driving a 550 Spyder without the fear of devaluing a priceless artefact. Moreover, owning such a car opens up a wealth of motoring opportunities, from attending classic car events to participating in historic rallies.

In truth, what could be better than owning something as incredible as a 550 Spyder replica? It’s a car that not only looks the part but also delivers on the promise of the original—offering thrilling drives, memorable journeys, and the satisfaction of knowing you’re part of a select group keeping the spirit of this iconic sports car alive.
